It took an earthquake, the closing of a military base, a financial meltdown and new legislation to create the Presidio Parkway that opened in 2015 along the San Francisco Bay. This parkway is an incredible tribute to collaboration, imagination and perseverance. It is a celebration of the vision of landscape architect Michael Painter, and the thousands of individuals who worked for decades to make this vision a reality. With the opening of the Tunnel Tops in 2022 this parkway project is complete. The unsafe old Doyle Drive has been replaced, the landscape is healed and the community is now invited to explore the new Presidio parklands that Painter’s ingenious tunnels have created.
This is the story of how this inspirational parkway was created over three long decades, and how this vision became a reality amidst intense debate and mounting complexities, as described by key contributors, by the people who made it happen. It is a story that should be told and retold, to inspire each of us to dream big, to collaborate and to persevere.
